Important Information

National Lutheran Schools Week has been a lot of fun. We worshipped our Lord together to begin each day, and we enjoyed a lot of interesting activities along the way. This Sunday the sixth grade handbell choir is playing at the 8:30 service. The rest of the kindergarten-grade 8 students are singing at the 11:00 service. Please remember to set your clocks and watches ahead one hour on Saturday night so that you are not late for the service on Sunday morning. Thank you.

380 people RSVPed for the Book Fair Barbecue, but we served 486! What a night of food, fun, and fellowship! Mrs. Hascup had to send her son to the store for more food, but we were glad to have so many people join us for dinner.

Other important events in March are the Variety Show on March 26 and the Ram-a-Thon on March 31. During Monday-Wednesday of Holy Week, we will have chapel every morning. On Monday, March 29, the early childhood teachers will lead a chapel about Palm Sunday. On Tuesday, March 30, Mary Ann LaBonte, a Redeemer Church member, is leading the children in a Seder meal in the gym. This will be in honor of Jesus celebrating the Passover with His disciples on Maundy Thursday. Finally, on Wednesday, March 31 before the Ram-a-Thon, the middle school will lead a chapel service in connection with Good Friday. You parents are welcome to join us for any or all of these special worship events.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If your children are like our Jordan, they didn’t come with an “owner’s manual” when they entered your life. We parents need to pray for faith, love, patience, wisdom, and strength as we raise our children. Unfortunately, some parents are under the impression that they must do whatever they can to make their children happy, at almost  any expense—and I’m not talking just monetary expense here.
Our task as parents is to give our children appropriate love, not “smother love,” and to raise our children in the “nurture and admonition of the Lord.” In order to prepare them to be Christian leaders, we need to teach them responsibility. Here are some ways in which we can help our children to become responsible individuals.
  • Give your child age-appropriate chores, and don’t pay the child for every little task that the child performs. Life doesn’t work that way. Hold your child accountable if he/she doesn’t do the chores. Don’t simply give in with “It’s just easier if I do it myself.” Such a stance sends the child a very wrong message.
  • Your child will not win every game that he/she plays and every contest that he/she enters. Children need to learn how to deal appropriately with losing. The “self-esteem building leagues” that award a trophy to every child on every team are not doing the children a favor in the long run. Should we cheer and encourage the child whose team loses 35-3? Absolutely! We need to teach good sportsmanship, win or lose.
  • Every person is sinful, and we all make mistakes. Jesus died for every one of us so that we can be forgiven and live forever with Him in heaven. However, if your child is guilty of breaking a rule or of hurting someone or something, whether it is at school or in the neighborhood, LET YOUR CHILD ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCE! The consequences for children here are very minor compared with the consequences they will suffer as wayward teens and adults. We learn more from our mistakes than we learn from our successes! Some of the most important lessons in school are not found in books.
I remember that for days, weeks, and months after JFK was assassinated in 1963, the picture of Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother appeared in the newspaper repeatedly. She tried to convince a grieving nation that her son was innocent of JFK’s assassination.
As an adult, one of my mom’s former kindergarteners stabbed his mother to death. When I asked Mom how the guy was as a kindergartener, she said that he wasn’t really a behavior problem back then. Sadly, some people are unable to appropriately handle circumstances that they face as they grow up.
  • Help your child understand that, at this point in life, SCHOOL is his/her job. Do not allow your child to miss school for frivolous reasons. Teach your child the importance of working at a job by bringing your child to school on time every day.
As we prepare our children to be Christian leaders, let’s also prepare them to be responsible teens and adults and good citizens of the community. I would much prefer that parents of other children say to their kids, “You are welcome to invite Jordan Essig over to the house any time” instead of “You may invite any of your classmates to the house except Jordan Essig.” By modeling responsible behavior ourselves, we can influence which of these statements other parents say to their children. May God bless your efforts as you tackle the awesome task of parenting!
Sunday, March 14: (Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour.) All students are asked to sing our two lively songs, “It’s a Great Day” and “Blessed Be” during the 11:00 a.m. service. The children can sit with you parents and then come forward as we call them to the chancel to sing.
                  The hugely popular Redeemer Variety Show will be held on Friday, March 26. Patty Loveland is coordinating this entertainment extravaganza.
We just sent home the Ram-a-Thon packets. Please read through the materials and encourage your child to help the school raise some money through this vital effort. Our actual Ram-a-Thon walk will take place on March 31, weather permitting. April 23 is the rain-out date. March 31 will be a full day of school, and extended care will be open that day.
Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
There are evening opportunities available!!
1.      LUNCH-ongoing. Have lunch with your child!! What a great way to get some volunteer hours in and spend a few minutes with your child on “their turf”. This involves helping to organize and fill the lunch trays and assisting the little ones with opening packages. Time frame is 10:15-12:30. Without volunteers for this, our lunch program cannot run smoothly which trickles down and affects other areas when they are not able to finish lunch on time. There are various days available to volunteer. Try it out for a day see if you like it!!
2.      Track & Field Day March 12th. We are looking for any time frames from 8:30-3pm. We need parents, friends, relatives, etc. to help with the stations, help time the races, and help with lunch.
3.      Baking for Variety show and stage help needed March 26 .  We are looking for bakers to provide baked goods for the evening and we desperately need a few people to help as stage hands. This is a great evening time frame for anyone who has difficulty getting volunteer hours in during the day.
